  • This depends on the power of the vehicle and when you acquired your full car license. If you acquired your driver's license before 2001 you are permitted to ride a 50cc scooter with a top speed of 30mph. You do not have to display L plates. If you want to ride a 125cc you will need to hold an A1 motorcycle license or higher or complete a CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) course and display L plates at all times. Should you wish to ride a 200cc scooter you will need an A2 or A license.

  • At the very minimum, you need to wear a helmet by law. We recommend wearing a full-face helmet as these offer the maximum protection to your head. A good pair of gloves is also highly recommended. As for jackets and trousers, there are a host of different options available from fully padded to abrasive resistant clothing.

  • If your moped or scooter was manufactured more than 40 years ago or registered before January 8th 1980 then yes. The DVLA introduced a new rolling classification meaning that if your vehicle is currently 39 years old it will then qualify for free road tax the following year. You also do not require an MOT.

Full details on historic vehicles can be found here.

  • If you ride a historic scooter you don't have to pay road tax. If you ride a 50-125cc scooter you will need to pay road tax of £20 per year and £44 per year for 200cc models.

Full details on tax can be found here.

    • Accurate to the descriptions given by Vintage Metals.

    • In fit-for-purpose condition, taking into consideration the age and mileage of each individual item.

    • Restored by our own experienced engineers, specifically for Vintage Metals and has the reputable Vintage Metals seal of approval.

  • Yes – Many sellers will claim a ‘total restoration’ or a ‘nut & bolt rebuild’ and will ask £7000+ for a scooter. We make a modest profit and restore all our scooters from the ground up. Our scooters undergo a 100% paint job, they are stripped right down to their component parts. The engine and gearbox are subject to a total rebuild. The scooter receives all new bearings, gears (regardless of whether their worn or not), piston and rings, barrel, cylinder, carburettor, clutch, exhaust etc. Please check out The Restoration Process page for more details. It’s then tested and registered for you. We are so confident this works, we give you a warranty and let you choose how to spend the £2500+ you saved on what you want.
